What you need to know about Vietnam student visa for foreigners

Vietnam student visa (DH) is a type of visa that you need to apply for from a competent authority if you want to study abroad in Vietnam.

This kind of visa grants you the validity up to 12 months but at least 30 days shorter than the validity period of your passport or international travel document. You can also apply for a single and multiple entries at your convenience. 

So, are there any requirements for a Vietnam student visa?

Yes, according to Article 10, Law No. 47/2014/QH13 on entry, exit, transit, and residence for foreigners in Vietnam, 

1. Foreigners must have a passport or a valid document for international travel;

2. They must have been invited or sponsored by agencies, organizations or individuals in Vietnam;

3. Not subject to the cases ineligible for entry specified in Article 21 of this Law;

4. When applying for a visa, the following special subjects must have documents that prove the purpose of entry: Foreigners who come to study must have admission documents of schools or educational institutions of Vietnam.

Required documents 

Besides, since the Vietnam student visa is involved with their sponsor individuals or schools/universities in Vietnam, it is important that the organization send all required documents to the competent authority in Vietnam first to get an Approval Letter.

You will need to present an Approval Letter with other documents to get your visa application done.

In details, 

  • Information of a foreigner's passport with the remaining validity period of more than 1 year.
  • Visa application form at the request of the Immigration Agency.
  • Admission document of the school or educational institution of Vietnam.
 

The process to obtain Vietnam student visas

Step 1: Apply for an entry letter for educational purposes.

An agency or individual acting as an invitee submits necessary documents to the Vietnam Immigration Department (located in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, or Danang) or the local Immigration Office, depending on the applicant's residence. 

Step 2: Foreigners compile documentation for the student visa application after the sponsor agency receives the sanctioned entry letter from the Immigration Department.

Subsequently, foreigners present this letter, along with a valid original passport, a completed visa application form, and other required documents. The visa fee is paid during the application process at the Vietnam Embassy or Consulates in their home country.
